A Teaching Series from the Book of Proverbs
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding."
"Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory she will deliver to you."
Proverbs 4:7-9 (NKJV)
This series works through eight foundational themes drawn from Proverbs. Each section stands alone as a study unit and links forward across the arc from wisdom's identity through to its full New Testament fulfilment in Christ.
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and instruction,
to perceive the words of understanding,
3 to receive the instruction of wisdom,
justice, judgment, and equity;
4 to give prudence to the simple,
to the young man knowledge and discretion.
Proverbs 1:1-4 (NKJV)
Solomon wrote not only Proverbs but also Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon. First Kings 4:32 tells us he wrote 3,000 proverbs in total, far more than the 800-plus recorded in this book. Proverbs 1-29 represent all the Solomonic proverbs we have in existence today. Proverbs 30-31 were added when Hezekiah's men copied out Solomon's proverbs (Proverbs 25:1), incorporating the words of Agur son of Jakeh and King Lemuel.
Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived, and it was by divine inspiration that he received this wisdom (1 Kings 3:12; 4:29-34; 2 Chronicles 1:11-12). That divine origin is not a footnote; it is the reason these sayings carry authority that no human collection can replicate.
All scriptures throughout this series are quoted from the New King James Version (NKJV). Each section includes a Scripture Reader with all referenced verses written in full and a Read Aloud feature.
The eight sections build in sequence: from the identity and nature of wisdom (Sections 1 and 2) through how wisdom is engaged and what she says (Sections 3 and 4), to what she produces and her contrast with Folly (Sections 5 and 6), her application across every domain of life (Section 7) and the complete New Testament synthesis showing wisdom's fulfilment in Christ (Section 8). Each section can be studied independently, but the arc rewards reading in sequence.
This series is not a verse-by-verse commentary and is not designed for those seeking critical engagement with the Hebrew text or the history of biblical scholarship. It is a structured teaching and study resource, pastoral in approach and practical in application. Those seeking scholarly depth should treat each section as a starting point and pursue further study from there.
